What it is and how it works
A combination of three sulfonamides that competitively inhibit bacterial dihydropteroate synthase, blocking folate synthesis and producing a bacteriostatic effect against susceptible organisms. Applied intravaginally, it was used mainly against Gardnerella vaginalis.
Indications
Treatment of vaginitis due to Gardnerella vaginalis (bacterial vaginosis); now generally regarded as less effective than metronidazole or clindamycin.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Intravaginally: one applicatorful of cream twice daily for 4–6 days, or one vaginal tablet twice daily for 10 days, continuing through menstruation.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides; renal impairment.
Warnings and precautions
Systemic absorption can occur; rare serious sulfonamide reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome, have been reported, and treatment should be stopped if rash or local irritation develops. Use of the applicator should be avoided late in pregnancy.
Pregnancy
Avoid in late pregnancy because sulfonamides may cause neonatal kernicterus; use earlier in pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C.
