What it is and how it works
Thiamine (B1), pyridoxine (B6) and cyanocobalamin (B12) are coenzymes in carbohydrate metabolism, amino-acid and neurotransmitter metabolism, and DNA synthesis and myelin maintenance respectively; together they correct combined deficiency of these vitamins.
Indications
Treatment of deficiency of vitamins B1, B6 and B12, and of neurological conditions in which such deficiency is present, such as peripheral neuropathy due to alcohol, diabetes or malnutrition.
Dosage and administration (summary)
By deep intramuscular injection, typically one ampoule daily in severe cases until symptoms improve, then one ampoule one to three times weekly, or switch to an oral preparation; dosing according to the product information and the treating physician.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of the vitamins or excipients (including cobalt).
Warnings and precautions
Anaphylactic reactions can occur after injection (thiamine). Prolonged high doses of pyridoxine may cause peripheral sensory neuropathy. B12 can mask folate deficiency; confirm the diagnosis of megaloblastic anaemia before treatment. Some products contain lidocaine and are for intramuscular use only.
Pregnancy
Use only at recommended doses and when indicated; high pyridoxine doses should be avoided.
Storage and supply
Store in a refrigerator or below 25 °C as stated on the pack, protected from light.
