What it is and how it works
Vitamin E (mainly α-tocopherol) is a lipid-soluble antioxidant that protects polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes from peroxidation by scavenging free radicals. Deficiency causes neuromuscular disorders (ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, myopathy) and haemolysis.
Indications
Prevention and treatment of vitamin E deficiency, particularly in fat malabsorption states (e.g. cholestasis, cystic fibrosis, short bowel syndrome, abetalipoproteinaemia) where oral supplementation is inadequate.
Dosage and administration (summary)
By intramuscular injection; the dose is individualised according to the cause and severity of deficiency and plasma levels.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the product.
Warnings and precautions
High doses may increase bleeding risk, particularly in patients receiving anticoagulants or with vitamin K deficiency; monitor coagulation. Large doses in preterm neonates have been associated with necrotising enterocolitis and sepsis. Injection-site reactions may occur.
Pregnancy
Use only at doses required to correct deficiency.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C, protected from light.
