Sterile, pyrogen-free water without added substances, used as a vehicle for dissolving or diluting medicines for parenteral administration. It is hypotonic and has no pharmacological action of its own.
Indications
Reconstitution and dilution of compatible medicinal products for injection or infusion.
Dosage and administration (summary)
The volume used is that stated in the instructions of the medicinal product being reconstituted or diluted.
Contraindications
Must not be injected alone intravenously, particularly in large volumes, because of its hypotonicity.
Warnings and precautions
Direct intravenous administration of water for injections can cause haemolysis, and it should be made approximately isotonic with an added solute before large-volume use. Check compatibility with the medicine to be diluted. Single-dose containers should be used once and any remainder discarded.
