- Alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist (indole alkaloid)
What it is and how it works
Yohimbine, an alkaloid from the bark of Pausinystalia yohimbe, selectively blocks presynaptic α2-adrenoceptors, increasing central and peripheral noradrenaline release and sympathetic activity. Its proposed effect on erectile function is attributed to increased penile blood inflow and central effects, but evidence of efficacy is limited.
