What it is and how it works
Zinc is an essential trace element and cofactor for more than 300 enzymes involved in protein and nucleic acid synthesis, immune function, wound healing, taste and growth. In high doses it induces intestinal metallothionein, which binds dietary copper and reduces its absorption.
Indications
Prevention and treatment of zinc deficiency (e.g. due to inadequate intake, malabsorption, increased losses); adjunct to oral rehydration in acute diarrhoea in children (WHO); maintenance therapy of Wilson’s disease (as zinc acetate, under specialist care).
Dosage and administration (summary)
Orally, the dose is expressed as elemental zinc and adjusted to the indication and response; take after food to reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the product.
Warnings and precautions
Gastrointestinal irritation (nausea, abdominal pain) is common. Prolonged high doses can cause copper deficiency with anaemia, neutropenia and neurological effects. Zinc reduces absorption of tetracyclines, quinolones and penicillamine, and iron and zinc mutually reduce absorption; separate doses by at least 2–3 hours.
Pregnancy
Safe at recommended doses; avoid excessive intake.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C, protected from moisture.
