What it is and how it works
Contains live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (Oka/Merck strain) at a considerably higher potency than varicella vaccine. It boosts VZV-specific cell-mediated immunity, which declines with age, reducing the risk and severity of herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgia.
Indications
Prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) and herpes zoster–related post-herpetic neuralgia in immunocompetent adults aged 50 years and over.
Dosage and administration (summary)
A single 0.65 mL dose by subcutaneous (or intramuscular, depending on the product) injection.
Contraindications
Primary or acquired immunodeficiency, including leukaemia, lymphoma, HIV/AIDS and high-dose immunosuppressive therapy; active untreated tuberculosis; pregnancy; severe hypersensitivity to vaccine components such as neomycin or gelatin.
Warnings and precautions
Not indicated for the treatment of zoster or post-herpetic neuralgia or for prevention of primary varicella. Efficacy declines with age and over time; the recombinant vaccine is generally preferred where available. Transmission of vaccine virus to susceptible contacts is theoretically possible; pregnancy should be avoided for 3 months after vaccination.

Contraindicated in pregnancy.
Storage and supply
Store refrigerated at 2–8 °C or frozen, according to the product, protected from light; use promptly after reconstitution.
