What it is and how it works

Betamethasone valerate is a potent topical corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and vasoconstrictive actions. Fusidic acid is a steroid-structured antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by blocking elongation factor G, and is active mainly against Staphylococcus aureus and streptococci.

Indications

Inflammatory dermatoses such as atopic or discoid eczema where secondary bacterial infection is confirmed or suspected.

Dosage and administration (summary)

Apply thinly to the affected area two to three times daily; treatment duration should normally not exceed 2 weeks.

Contraindications

Primary bacterial, viral (e.g. herpes simplex, varicella), fungal or tuberculous skin infections; rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis; hypersensitivity to components.

Warnings and precautions

Prolonged use or use under occlusion, on the face or in skin folds increases the risk of skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia and systemic absorption with adrenal suppression. Prolonged or repeated use increases the risk of fusidic acid resistance. Avoid contact with eyes.

Pregnancy

Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed, on limited areas for short periods.

Storage and supply

Store below 30 °C; discard the tube within the in-use period stated by the manufacturer after opening.
