What it is and how it works
Clotrimazole, an imidazole antifungal, inhibits ergosterol synthesis and is active against dermatophytes, Candida and some Gram-positive bacteria. Hydrocortisone, a mild corticosteroid, reduces the inflammation and itching associated with the infection.
Indications
Inflamed fungal skin infections such as tinea pedis, tinea cruris and candidal intertrigo where inflammatory symptoms are prominent.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Apply thinly to the affected area twice daily; maximum duration usually 7 days (continue a plain antifungal afterwards if required).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to imidazoles or hydrocortisone; untreated bacterial or viral skin infections (e.g. herpes, varicella), acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis; application to the eyes or broken skin over large areas.
Warnings and precautions
Prolonged use, use under occlusion or on the face increases the risk of corticosteroid adverse effects such as skin atrophy, and may mask or worsen fungal infection if continued beyond the recommended duration. Local irritation, burning or contact dermatitis may occur. Avoid contact with eyes; some products may damage latex contraceptives if used in the genital area.
Pregnancy
May be used in pregnancy for short periods on limited areas.
