What it is and how it works
Calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide neutralise gastric acid rapidly, giving fast symptom relief, while famotidine, an H2-receptor antagonist, reduces gastric acid secretion for several hours, prolonging the effect.
Indications
Short-term relief of heartburn, acid indigestion and sour stomach associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Oral (e.g. famotidine 10 mg / calcium carbonate 800 mg / magnesium hydroxide 165 mg): chew 1 tablet when symptoms occur; maximum 2 tablets in 24 hours, for no longer than 14 days without medical advice.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to famotidine or other H2-receptor antagonists; hypercalcaemia; severe renal impairment.
Warnings and precautions
Persistent symptoms, dysphagia, weight loss, vomiting, or gastrointestinal bleeding require medical evaluation to exclude serious disease, including malignancy. Use with caution in renal impairment (magnesium and calcium accumulation, famotidine dose adjustment). Antacids may reduce absorption of other drugs (e.g. tetracyclines, quinolones, iron, levothyroxine) — separate dosing.
