- Haemodialysis concentrate; electrolyte concentrate for preparation of dialysis fluid
What it is and how it works
This is a concentrated electrolyte solution that the haemodialysis machine dilutes proportionally with purified water to produce dialysis fluid. Depending on the formulation it is either a single acetate-buffered concentrate or the component used with a separate concentrate in bicarbonate dialysis. Across the dialyser membrane, solutes move by diffusion along concentration gradients, removing urea, creatinine and potassium and correcting acidosis. The Roman numeral denotes a formulation with a specific electrolyte composition stated by the manufacturer.
Indications
Preparation of dialysis fluid for haemodialysis in acute kidney injury and chronic kidney failure, and for removal of certain dialysable toxins.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Not administered to the patient directly; it is used by the dialysis machine at the dilution ratio stated on the label, and the dialysis prescription is individualised by the nephrologist.
Warnings and precautions
Not for injection or infusion despite the presentation. Use only with machines set to the correct dilution ratio and the matching concentrate type, and check the conductivity of the final dialysis fluid before treatment, because errors can cause serious electrolyte disturbances and haemolysis. Water used for dilution must meet dialysis water quality standards (e.g. ISO 23500), and serum potassium, calcium and acid–base status should be monitored to select the appropriate formulation.
Storage and supply
Store at room temperature (usually 5–30 °C); do not freeze; keep containers closed until use.
