What it is and how it works
Mequinol is a tyrosinase substrate and competitive inhibitor that reduces melanin formation in melanocytes. Tretinoin (all-trans retinoic acid) increases epidermal turnover and enhances penetration of mequinol, accelerating dispersal and loss of pigment.
Indications
Treatment of solar lentigines (age or liver spots) and related hyperpigmented lesions of sun-damaged skin, as part of a sun-avoidance programme.
Dosage and administration (summary)
The solution (commonly mequinol 2% / tretinoin 0.01%) is applied to the lesions with the applicator twice daily, morning and evening at least 8 hours apart.
Contraindications
Pregnancy or women planning pregnancy; hypersensitivity to the components; application to eczematous, sunburnt or broken skin.
Warnings and precautions
Local irritation, erythema, burning, desquamation and hypopigmentation or halo depigmentation around lesions are common. Treated skin is photosensitive; avoid sun exposure and sunlamps and use sunscreen and protective clothing. Avoid concomitant use of other irritant or photosensitising topical products; avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy because of the retinoid component.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; flammable solution, keep away from heat and flame.
