What it is and how it works
Niclosamide uncouples oxidative phosphorylation and inhibits glucose uptake in tapeworms, killing the scolex and proximal segments on contact; it is minimally absorbed from the gut.
Indications
Intestinal tapeworm infections, including Taenia saginata, Taenia solium, Diphyllobothrium latum and Hymenolepis nana.
Dosage and administration (summary)
Oral, tablets chewed thoroughly: adults usually 2 g as a single dose after a light breakfast for most tapeworms; for Hymenolepis nana 2 g on the first day followed by 1 g daily for 6 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to niclosamide.
Warnings and precautions
It is not active against cysticercosis; in Taenia solium infection a laxative is often given about 2 hours after the dose to expel segments and reduce the theoretical risk of cysticercosis. Alcohol should be avoided on the day of treatment. Adverse effects are mainly mild gastrointestinal upset.
Pregnancy
Poorly absorbed and considered acceptable in pregnancy when treatment cannot be delayed.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C in a dry place.
