Technetium (Sup99m/Suptc) Stannous Agent Labelled Cells
Injection, Powder, Lyophilized, for Solution · Intravenous · 100 mCi
- List code
- 51242
- Pharmacologic class
- Diagnostic radiopharmaceutical (stannous agent kit for 99mTc labelling of red blood cells)
What it is and how it works
Stannous (tin II) ions enter red blood cells and reduce subsequently administered or added technetium-99m pertechnetate, which then binds to haemoglobin and is retained within the cells. Labelling may be performed in vivo, in vitro or by a modified in vivo/in vitro method, producing a stable blood pool tracer.
Indications
Blood pool scintigraphy, including radionuclide ventriculography (gated cardiac studies); localisation of gastrointestinal bleeding; imaging of vascular malformations such as hepatic haemangioma.
Dosage and administration (summary)
The stannous agent and the technetium activity are given according to the labelling method and local nuclear medicine protocols, individualised by the specialist.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the kit components.
Warnings and precautions
Labelling efficiency may be reduced by certain drugs (e.g. heparin, some cardiac drugs) and by recent blood transfusion. Strict aseptic technique and positive patient identification are essential when blood is handled outside the body. Radiation exposure should be justified and minimised; interrupt breast-feeding temporarily.
Pregnancy
Use only when clearly necessary, weighing diagnostic benefit against fetal radiation exposure.
Storage and supply
Store the kit as specified by the manufacturer (typically below 25 °C); use the labelled cells promptly, in lead shielding.
