What it is and how it works
Minoxidil, a potassium-channel opener, prolongs the anagen phase and enlarges miniaturised hair follicles. Azelaic acid has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects and inhibits 5-alpha-reductase in vitro, while betamethasone, a potent corticosteroid, reduces perifollicular inflammation.
Indications
Androgenetic alopecia and other forms of hair loss in which perifollicular inflammation is a contributing factor, as an extemporaneous or specialist-directed combination.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component; infections, ulceration or broken skin of the scalp; scalp rosacea or perioral dermatitis-type eruptions.
Warnings and precautions
The corticosteroid component may cause skin atrophy, telangiectasia and, with prolonged or extensive use, systemic absorption, so long-term continuous use should be avoided. Minoxidil may cause scalp irritation, unwanted facial hair growth and, rarely, tachycardia or hypotension; use with caution in cardiovascular disease. Initial temporary hair shedding may occur.
Pregnancy
Not recommended in pregnancy or breast-feeding.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C; the solution is usually alcohol-based and flammable — keep away from flames.
