What it is and how it works
Minoxidil prolongs the anagen phase and enlarges miniaturised follicles; tretinoin, a retinoid, increases percutaneous absorption of minoxidil and may itself promote follicular activity. Azelaic acid has anti-inflammatory activity and inhibits 5-alpha-reductase in vitro, and betamethasone suppresses perifollicular inflammation.
Indications
Androgenetic alopecia and other forms of hair loss, particularly where response to minoxidil alone is insufficient, as an extemporaneous or specialist-directed combination.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component; broken, infected or eczematous scalp; pregnancy or planned pregnancy (tretinoin).
Warnings and precautions
Tretinoin and the alcohol vehicle may cause scalp irritation, dryness and photosensitivity; avoid excessive sun exposure. Prolonged corticosteroid use may cause skin atrophy and systemic absorption. Minoxidil may cause hypertrichosis and, rarely, cardiovascular effects; caution in heart disease.
Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy because of the retinoid component.
Storage and supply
Store below 25 °C, protected from light; the alcohol-based solution is flammable.
