What it is and how it works
A sterile kit containing etidronic acid (HEDP) with a reducing agent, to be labelled with rhenium perrhenate (rhenium-186 or rhenium-188) to form a rhenium-HEDP complex. The labelled complex localises in bone at sites of increased osteoblastic activity, delivering beta radiation to skeletal metastases.
Indications
Preparation of rhenium-HEDP for palliation of pain from osteoblastic bone metastases confirmed by bone scintigraphy.
Dosage and administration (summary)
The kit itself is not administered; the labelled product is dosed individually according to protocol by nuclear medicine specialists, by slow intravenous injection.
Contraindications
For the labelled product: pregnancy and breast-feeding, severe bone marrow suppression and severe renal impairment.
Warnings and precautions
Radiolabelling and quality control (radiochemical purity) must follow the manufacturer’s instructions in an authorised radiopharmacy. The labelled product causes transient myelosuppression and may cause a pain flare; radiation-protection measures apply.
Pregnancy
Therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals are contraindicated in pregnancy; pregnancy must be excluded before administration.
Storage and supply
Store the unlabelled kit according to the manufacturer (commonly 2–8 °C or below 25 °C); store the labelled product in lead shielding and use within the stated time.
